Reading

We want our children to

  • have a secure understanding of phonics
  • read independently with fluency and accuracy
  • have an extensive and rich vocabulary so that they can communicate ideas clearly
  • have excellent comprehension skills
  • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • show that they can persevere with challenging texts
  • have an appreciation of our rich and varied literary heritage

Reading is a crucial skill. Therefore, we endeavour to ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards reading which will stay with them.

Phonics and Early Reading at MFL
Phonics and Reading at MFL are taught through the Little Wandle, Letters and Sounds programme. These important skills are taught right from when the children start school-life in EYFS. Phonics provides pupils with the tools to decode words when reading, and to segment words into individual sounds for writing and spelling.
Alongside the teaching of Phonics, children will use the matched Little Wandle Reading books and will read at least three times a week in a group. These books will be brought home each week.
The children will also bring home a ‘Book to Share’ which they choose each week and an adult should read these to the children or with the children.

Writing

Strong Foundations

In EYFS and Key Stage 1 we focus on transcription and the basic skills of writing to enable secure foundations for the start of the journey as a writer.

Building Writers

In Year 2 and Lower Key Stage 2 once foundations of writing are secure we focus on grammar and contextual sentence construction. We apply this teaching in short burst writing.

Thriving Authors

As the children move into Upper Key Stage 2 they use and apply the writing skills they have learnt in a full writing process of  planning, drafting, revising and publishing
